What Are Offset Printing Services?

A printer who provides offset printing services will use offset presses and a specific process to create finished printed materials. The process works on the basic principle that ink and water do not mix, so that the ink only adheres to the area to be printed. Water is used on all areas that will be left blank and will not be printed on. The offset process does not use the traditional method of printing where the ink is placed on a plate and then applied directly to the paper. Instead, a rubber blanket or mat is used, and the ink is offset onto the blanket and then applied to the paper from the blanket instead of directly from the printing plates. Printing companies often offer these services to clients because of the many advantages.

What Image Quality Does Offset Offer?

The image quality provided with the offset process is very high, and each image is consistent from the first piece printed to the last item of a very large order. The quality and consistency of the image is one of the most common reasons that this process is used, and the graphics are typically crisp and clear, without any blurring or fading during the printing process.

What is 4 Color Printing?

Any company that can provide offset printing services will typically use the 4 color printing process, and this is also true with almost every commercial printer. This color scheme uses 4 standard colors, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and it offers printed images that are vibrant and realistic. RGB is a color scheme that only uses 3 colors. Each color [with CMYK] is represented by a corresponding value of cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks, on a scale from 0% to 100%.

Is the Offset Process Cost Effective?

One of the biggest advantages of the offset printing services, besides exceptional image quality, is the fact that this type of order is usually very cost effective when items are printed in bulk quantity. With offset the more items printed the lower the individual cost per item will be. This means larger orders will have a lower per piece cost, making it more cost effective.

What Does This Type of Printing Run Involve?

Offset printing services will require additional set up and preparation. The printing plates must be produced and then installed, and this requires some time and effort to do. Offset is not usually recommended for small print orders because of the added set up time and costs that can be involved with the offset process.

Are There Various Offset Printing Press Types?

There are two main types of offset presses that may be used for printing, and both will provide exceptional image quality. A web fed press will be fed by an enormous roll of paper, which is used on a continuous basis. A sheet fed press will use individual paper sheets that can vary in size, depending on the specific order that is being printed. Both press types have the same advantages, and the same potential drawbacks. The only difference is the way that the paper is fed into the press. Web fed presses are typically used for high volume orders that involve 50,000 or more pieces. Sheet fed presses are generally used for business printing and lower volume orders.

Why is the Offset Process Used?

There are many reasons why offset printing services are ordered. These services provide high quality images and printed materials, they can be very cost effective with a low per piece price when a bulk order is placed, and offset is a common choice because it has a reasonable turnaround time and each printed item is consistent throughout the process.

Is the Offset Process Right for Your Printed Materials?

Offset printing services are not always the best possible choice, even though they have many advantages. If you just need 100 flyers or 500 postcards printed up then the cost of the offset process could be expensive. Discuss your material needs with a professional printer to determine which methods, techniques, and even papers and inks will work best in your specific situation.
